You will laugh, you will shed tears. You might be the mom who plans the party months in advance, with a wonderful theme and tons of yummy food and fun games. You might be the mom who decides to have just a little party with close family and friends. Whatever “style” of mommy / first birthday celebrating you are, there is no denying when your baby turns one, your heart aches yet you are excited all at the same time.
They sure to come up on us quickly, don’t they? The hustle bustle of the first year from the moment that little bundle was placed on your chest, to their first smile, giggle, belly laugh. The first time they recognized you and then the first time they cried when you left the room. When they reached to be picked up by you. YOU. The first moment they sit up, they crawl and maybe even walk. The babbles, the talking. The mamas the dadas. The crying all night….or the sleeping all night (ever have that moment where you wake up panicked because your child slept for longer than three hours in a row??) All of that stuff, all of that amazing goodness, growth and development that comes with that first year. It’s huge!
Seriously, first birthdays.
Man. They are a big one. I can relate. I can relate to thinking back at how quickly that all comes and goes. I have shed tears over the first birthday. I have shared laughs at the party. I have looked back at piles and piles of photographs, trying to pick out the RIGHT ones from each month to display at the party. I am the mom who put that photo banner up and kept it up for months. Like months. I then may or may not have gotten upset when my husband asked if it was okay to take said banner down yet. I get it.
First birthdays are big. And so they should be captured.
Duke turns one this week. His mom wanted to capture him as he is (bunny and blanket in tow…my favourite!). Beautiful, happy, and so darn stinkin adorable. This little man stole my heart. When mom opened the car door, the first thing I saw was his kicks. Shoes. Ack. I was in love already…followed by suspenders. Please! Stop it. Then, he smiled at me. Melt. Melt melt melt my heart. Here is Duke, in his “one” glory.
First birthdays….they kind of make me sappy.
Duke learned a new trick just the morning of our session….how to stick out his tongue. It was perfect timing! I got to capture his brand spankin new “thing”. Amazing.
Every time I look at this photo, I melt. His face is so precious.
Sometimes parents don’t choose the images a photographer loves the most (and I love this one the most…) I was so happy when Duke’s mama chose this moment of the two of them. Sometimes, it’s the simplest moments that make for the best photographs…
We ended the session with a little cupcake smash in the orchard. It was the perfect end to a wonderful session.
Happy first birthday, Duke.
