Emma turns 1! { Cake Smash Photography Hamilton }

Who doesn’t love a good ‘ol cake smash?  I think cake smash photography is a fun and exciting way to capture your one year old! It’s the perfect age for it – they get to have their cake, and eat it too…or smash it, destroy it, walk through it, crawl through it, feed it to mum and dad…well…you get the idea!  We always start the session with “clean” images pre-cake. This can include some fun backdrops or even photos taken outdoors and can also include little props and such – all depending on personal style and taste.

Emma and my son Liam knew each other in utero. Here mom and I worked together and were due on the same day. Miss Emma arrived a bit earlier than my Liam did…she was 3 weeks early however Liam has surpassed her in size! She is so tiny. I got to spend some time after the session with Emma and her mama. Emma wanted me to pick her up and I ended up carrying her around on one hip and Liam around on the other. It was a little dose of what having twins would be like…except I was slightly lop-sided since Liam is a tank compared to this peanut!

When Emma’s mom asked to schedule in her cake smash session, she wanted “pink zebra” for her theme. She brought some of her own props (bought at Itsy Bitsy Glitzy in Brantford, I do believe) and we used some props that I have in studio as well. I started with my favourite “vintage” inspired set and we got some adorable photos of Emma!  I have other backdrops and sets I use but this is by far, one of my favourites!

We do offer a cake smash photography package which includes everything you might want in a session – the session itself, a cake made by our professional baker who can create cakes with custom designs, a collage as well as a discount to use towards any other prints, products or packages. The cake smash photography package is very popular and gives you a really neat collage to hang in your child’s room or elsewhere in your home!  Here are some of my favourite “clean” pre-cake smash photos as well as the collage that was designed using some of her cake smash images.

Baby Ella | 6 Days New { Hamilton Newborn Photographer }

I love being a newborn photographer! It makes my heart happy to snuggle and cuddle these sweet babies and to capture them at such a beautiful and amazing stage in their lives…a stage that flies by far too quickly. As a newborn photographer I encourage my clients to bring in their babies as early as possible. Baby Ella here is only 6 days old – such a perfect age for her very first photo session! She was a champ…an eating champ and a photography champ! Some babies seem to be marathon eaters who take a long time to eat a meal but then sleep for awhile…other babies eat tiny meals frequently. This was Ella. She was eating eating to get back up to her birth weight and liked to eat frequently, but it was just fine because we would work on one set, she would need to eat, then she would feed and we would change to another set! The down-side to so much eating is so much peeing…this little girl looks sweet and innocent but she got me good…twice! The one time I was putting her into a swaddle by laying her in my lap…so basically when I moved her it looked like I was the one who had peed myself lol. Ahhh, all in a day’s work as a newborn photographer! Parents always apologize but there is no reason what-so-ever to do so…babies are just that, babies! They can’t help it and really, it’s a great sign…it just means they are getting plenty to eat! I’m sure this sweet little one will be back at her birth weight in no time at all!

Here are a few images from Ella’s newborn photography session. I loved having the opportunity to meet Ella’s family (including her big sister who makes an appearance at the end) and getting to snuggle this peanut a ton!

She had these amazing red lips…I’m guessing it’s from eating so much but they are just beautiful…not to mention that perfect baby skin and those sweet eye-lashes. Sigh!

I love this little ruffle wrap. I don’t know where it originally came from because I bought it off a photographer friend of mine. It’s just the perfect shade of pink and is a nice contrast to the dark brown backdrop and looks amazing with her creamy skin! I’m always adding new props to my collection and have tons of colours and items to choose from (although I prefer neutrals and use them a lot in my sessions).

This was my first time trying a grey set and I think I love it! The purple headband is just a sweet little addition and are from Kelly’s Prop Shop

Mom liked this little “basket / bowl” best of all…she thought it looked like a little chestnut! I think she looks like a sweet little peanut in it 🙂

As a newborn photographer I aim to capture the baby as a whole but also the sweet little details that change too quickly…from hair, to eyelashes, to lips and fingers and toes…I capture it all!

Great Expectations | 34 Weeks { Maternity Photography Kitchener Waterloo }

I haven’t had the chance to photograph many maternity photography sessions lately. I’m not sure why things seem to come and go in waves. At one point I’ll be photographing a ton of maternity sessions, and then sometimes there is a few months between maternity photography sessions. It’s strange how it works. However, I sure am glad I had the opportunity to photograph this session. I feel like we captured some images that mom can look back on and smile about! Being pregnant is such an interesting time in one’s life, it’s nice to have some maternity photos to look back on…especially maternity photos that are all about the belly and making mama look like her fabulous self!

Seeing her belly reminded me of what my belly was like while pregnant – and yes she is carrying a boy and to me, that is a boy belly: all out front! Mama-to-be here looks amazing and really made me miss my own baby-belly. Not that I have already forgotten about the aches and pains and the alien-being-from-within-taking-over-your-body stuff that comes along with it….but once you get past all of that, being pregnant is such an amazing thing, really and truly. I got told all the time my belly was huge and the like, but really I never felt like I looked better! I used to joke it was the only time in my life I’ll have a rock hard stomach, so I may as well show it off and love the belly!

I really do believe that pregnancy – whether it is your first or your fifth – is an amazing time in your life and should be captured and remembered. Looking back and seeing yourself looking beautiful while pregnant is a gift. Not all sessions are the same. Some women do not like to show their bare belly, whereas other women love to. Maternity photography is tailored around your personality and what makes you feel good! This session had an amazing mix of all kinds of outfit changes, clothing styles, and really touched on just about each style I offer…even an indoor studio session to start, then we headed off to the great outdoors which included a bit of hiking, wading through the water of a local creek and even a bit of rock climbing 😉  Mama-to-be was a trooper. She did everything I asked of her with complete confidence in me…and I am so happy she did!

I hope you are able to look at this session and see that maternity portraits can be for everyone, regardless of your style or how much you want to show, and that pregnancy is a time to be celebrated and looked back on with a huge smile! Here are just a few of my many favourites from my most recent maternity portrait session.

I love when the significant others get involved in the sessions too! It makes them just that much more special. Even if some arms have to be twisted along the way, they’re so nice to have and to know baby will be able to look at these images as they grow and see how much love was there before they were even born!

We headed to Apps Mill between Brantford & Paris for the outdoor set. This was where the hiking, swimming, wading, rock climbing and the works came into play!!

Me: “Hey Kelly (her name is also Kelly), how about you walk through the entire creek to the other side and lay on all those rocks?!” LOL. It took her a few seconds to realize I was totally serious, she put on her husband’s flip flops and made it through the water. She did draw the line at standing on the rocks really close to the edge of the water because she would have to be barefoot and the rocks were gross and slimy. Hey, everyone has their limits!

Maternity_Photography_Kitchener_Waterloo_ pregnancy_photography

This image. THIS is the entire reason I wanted to head out to this spot. We fought rain (if you look closely, while Kelly is on the bed of rocks it was raining), and intense heat for this session for this image above. Yup, I was inspired by the amazing Meg Bitton and had to try my own version of it. I think it was worth it and hope mama here does too!!

Miss Quinn { Kitchener Baby Photography }

Meet Little Miss Quinn. She came in to have baby photography done at just 2 weeks new! She was such a tiny peanut for this photo session.  Quinn was born a few weeks early, and although she was bigger than they thought she was going to be, she was still quite small (especially compared to my 9lb tank child!)  Her little tongue was sticking out at me a lot, which I find is pretty common with babies who are born a bit early. I’m not sure why that happens, but maybe she was just reminding us that she is the boss and babies come whenever they feel like, so there hah!

I think it’s so important to have your newborn baby photographs taken within the first 2 weeks of life, when possible. It is such an amazing and special time. Babies grow up SO fast and you forget SO quickly how little they are in the beginning. When they come in at this age, they sleep more and are usually more easy to pose and move around. Miss Quinn here had a big startle reflex – also common with babies born a wee bit early. So, we wrapped her up, made her feel as cozy and safe as possible, and managed to capture some stunning images. Here are a few of my favourites from Quinn’s newborn baby photo session:

Baby Photography - Kitchener, Brantford, Paris

I love baby toes! Sooo sweet!

Hat by Zoe & Oliver  |  Brown mini-blanket by Kelly’s Prop Shop

Because Quinn had a big startle reflex she jumped pretty much every time the camera shutter clicked. With this pose, as with all poses, baby’s safety was first and foremost. Mom is right there beside her (in fact, I have edited out part of mom’s leg in this final image because she was so close). We were afraid when the shutter clicked and the light flashed she would throw her arms open and startle. She didn’t, but mom was there with hands close by just to be safe! Quinn’s little tongue makes me laugh. I actually find that this is common with babies who are born a tiny bit early, as Quinn was. I’m not sure why their little tongues stick out at us…maybe just to remind us that they come whenever they feel like and they are the boss of us no matter what, haha!

I love when I am able to capture sibling photos. This little girl is such a proud big sister, she could not wait to pose with her baby sis! While patiently waiting, Paige got to watch Cinderella on the TV just beside the studio….then, when it was her turn for photos, she happily jumped in and happily posed with Quinn!

Headband made by Kelly’s Prop Shop

What a sweet baby girl! Thank you for bringing such a little peanut in for photos!

Celebrating with Balloons!! | { Kitchener Candid Family Photos }

Hmmm, well…what can I say about this famiy? They are good friends of ours and I love getting to not only visit with them but photograph them! Andrea (mom) asked me to take some updated photos of her boys since Will turned on in May and these would be his milestone photos.  I convinced her to let me take them to Apps Mill in Brantford / Paris area, hike along the trails with our kids (Liam came too!!) and take photos by the water. And I also convinced her to update their family photos….I mean if we’re going through all that trouble to get to the location, may as well get some of the entire family altogether 😉

I thoroughly enjoy photographing not only children but families too. I have this selfish part of me that loves to capture those family images that will hang on walls and be looked at throughout the years – and I have to note, this family has MANY photos that I have had the honour of taking for them over the past 3+ years all over their walls…and on shelves…and on bulletin boards….it’s pretty neat, actually. Parents take photos of their kids quite often….cell phones, little point and shoots, etc., but to get a photo of everyone together looking all spiffy in good clothes and such…well that’s rare. Don’t get me wrong, the photos of the kids are cherished too, but there is something about a great family photo that just gets me! It’s always fun to get those nice photos of the family standing or sitting together and looking at the camera, but I also enjoy the candid family photos that show the fun that you have together and the more laid back side. I think the love shines through when families just interact (and I gently direct). Here are a few of my favourites from these more candid family photos !

Just because it was little brother turning one, doesn’t mean big brother John can’t play with the balloons. Kids love balloons….there’s just something about them that is magical….yup, ballooons and bubbles!

I love the one on the far left….he thought the balloons were just fun to shake around and to go crazy with! He just kind of enveloped himself admist a sea of balloons!

Gah – this smile just melts. my. heart.

Big brother John looks pretty darn handsome here!!

Love this set of candid family photos!  I can’t remember if we asked them to hug but somehow they ended up in a bit of a cute looking headlock lol….boys will be boys!!

 Having your dad throw you up in the air over and over is a fabulous way to end a wonderful photo session if I do say so myself!!
